Battle Wine Estate

The vines were planted on south facing slopes in the heart of the Sussex countryside. They are grown on a system of double high wires known as a ‘Geneva Double Curtain’ (GDC). The vines are spur pruned. The fruiting wood is left at the top of the trelliswork and the summer shoots are allowed to hang down – like a curtain. This maximises the amount of sunlight the fruit receives and increases the chances of early ripening and high sugars.

The vine varieties were carefully chosen to ensure a good level of production even in poor weather years. The original plants were imported directly from a specialist grower in Germany. The main varieties grown by Battle Wine Estate are Reichensteiner, Schonburger, Pinot Noir, Zweigeltrebe, Kerner and Huxelrebe.
